This is simply an example of a "off trail hike" that can be done anywhere. Its located right next to highway 89A.
On this cold morning (16*), I had business on the north side of Prescott, so I came out of the mountains early and planned a quick hike. This area, on the north side of the Bradshaws is simply beautiful, especially at sunrise. You have a chance to see antelope, coyotes, deer and plenty of finches.
- Miles... 4 round trip.
- Time... 1 to 2 hours.
- Difficulty... easy.
- Elevation drop... 163
Consider early, because of the noise pollution this area gets, from take off and landings for Embry-Riddle pilot training. This usually begins around 8:30 AM.
Parking area ahead, Granite Dells Parkway exit.
Directions...
On 89A, exit at Granite Dells Parkway and turn right onto the dead end road. Park here if you don't see any... No Parking signs.
Use the Google Track below to locate a "cowboy gate". Close the gate behind you and climb a small hill.
San Francisco Peaks in background.
Every "off trail hike" should have a goal, and the windmill about 2 miles north, makes a good one. Plan for about 4 miles round trip, if you only go to the windmill. I turned the "Track" off because I continued on. Simply return the way you came.
Windmill in the distance.
Watch out for cactus hidden in grass.
Nearing the windmill.
Turn around and return.
